Brazilian Christ Is One of the World's New Seven Wonders PDF Print E-mail
Written by Elma Lia Nascimento

Rio's Christ the Redeemer Brazil's most famous post card, Christ the Redeemer, the open-arms statue that is a symbol of Rio de Janeiro, has become one of the new Seven World Wonders. The results of the choice, which was made through a quite flawed voting system on the Internet and text messaging, was announced in Lisbon, capital of Portugal, this Saturday, July 7.

The Brazilian wonder has been chosen together with six other monuments: China's Great Wall; the  Petra monument, in Jordan; the Inca city of Machu Picchu, in Peru; the pyramid of Chichén Itzá, in Mexico; the old arena of Coliseum, in Rome; and the Taj Mahal mausoleum, in India.

The ceremony in Lisbon counted on the participation of US's former astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, as well as the UN's ex general secretary Kofi Annan, who were joined by actress and singer Jennifer López. Portuguese premier, José Socrates, acting president of the European Union (EU) was also present.

British actor Ben Kingsley and American actress Hillary Swank hosted the extravaganza. UNESCO, the UN organ in charge of the world's cultural patrimony, wasn't in favor of the promotion and opted out of the event.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as soon as he heard about the news, released a note congratulating Rio and Brazil for the choice.

"Christ the Redeemer was always a Rio de Janeiro's and a Brazil's wonder. From now on it is also one of the world's Seven Wonders," says the note.

Rio governor, Sérgio Cabral, also celebrated the accomplishment and thanked his fellow Brazilians who voted for the statue: "It is a victory that boosts Rio de Janeiro as one of the most desired and admired destinations in the world. Thank you, Brazil."

The contest, promoted by a Swiss foundation, got about 100 million votes.

The Christ the Redeemer's statue is about 38 meters (125 feet) high and rests on the top of the Corcovado hill, which is 740 meters (2428 feet) above sea level.

The sculpture made of soapstone from the Corcovado hill was designed by engineer Heitor Silva Costa, who won a contest that chose the best project. Another Brazilian, plastic artist Carlos Oswald, was responsible for the final drawing. But it was Polish-born French artist Paul Landowski who sculpted the statue.

It was in 1922, the year when Brazil celebrated one hundred years of its independence from Portugal that Rio had the groundbreaking ceremony for the Christ. The monument would be finished only 9 years later, however.

The statue was finally dedicated on October 12, 1931. The monument's construction had been a dream of the Catholic Church in Brazil since the middle of the 19th century, when ecclesiastical authorities started talking about a giant image of Christ to be erected in Rio, then capital of Brazil.

Bel Noronha, the great-granddaughter of the engineer who designed the Christ is excited about the contest's result: "The choice is a sign that Brazilians are capable, that we can be proud of our achievements. Brazil doesn't do only wrongs. It is perhaps a start to recognize our people. I always thought that we need to have more self-esteem,"

Noronha is the author of "Christo Redemptor" a documentary that tells the story behind the building of the monument with testimonies from people who took part in the project and archive images never made public. The film that was presented recently in New York hasn't yet been seen in Brazilian theaters or TV.

I am a Brazilian, naturalized American man and would like to disagree with the inclusion of the Cristo in the list. The statue is no doubt breathtaking, but so are the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. The seven wonders should be chosen by people who truly understand art, such as a committee of notables, rather than by the populace so easily influenced by weasels such as Lula. The result, at least in the case of the Cristo, was merely the result of a marketing campaign.

Excuse me.Are you questioning the tireless efforts made by Lula and Marta Suplicy to incude the Christ as one of the 7 new wonders? You are unpatriotic and anti Marta. Unacceptable for me. smilies/grin.gif

Lula is an idiot, the worst president we have had in the last 100 years who was lucky enough to be elected during a time of unprecedent economical growth. Marta is what she has always been, a member of the blind bourgeoisie, who understands more of sex and fashion than anything politic. Lula's approval rate only proves that the Brazilian people, in its majority, is still very ignorant and obtuse.

You made all these comments and I did not!!!

What unprecedented economic growth you are talking about? Another myth created by a Marketing campaign carefully orchestrated by his cronies.

Corcovado is very beautiful, indeed, but it seems to me that the concept here is to select structures built by men. Paulo, Brazil's exports have infused the country with billions of dollars and Wall Street sees our country as one of the strongest emerging economies in the world, along with India and China.

Fine for the Wall Street and the investors in BOVESPA. I dont know if you have invested in BOVESPA on the advice of WSJ and if you did, all the best.

Exporting minerals, soy and other agricultural products for peanuts to China is bringing billions of dollars to our country, I agree. Of course, WSJ would not talk about the soaring prices of the food products for the Brazilian consumers, nor how the middle class and the small businesses are being screwed.

btw, is WSJ not being bought by Rupert Murdoch?

Christ my Redeemer
written by Cornelis Droog, July 09, 2007
Christ my Redeemer

About 100 million people over the whole world have chosen the seven new wonder of the world. … Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro …

Since Jesus Christ is Eternal God, it is blasphemy to make any kind of an “image” of Christ in ANY form. These are the words of God to the whole human race:
Exodus 20:4-5 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD [JEHOVAH] thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” (This is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:8-9)

Romans 1:22-25 “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”

Slow down Mr. Droog
written by Alex, July 10, 2007
I believe that idolatry is wrong. Having said that, I believe that we are under Grace and not under the Law. If you are going to take those verses literally Cornelius, then you will have to destroy all the work of art depicting the Lord Jesus and other Bible characters. And while you are at it, go to your Sunday School and burn all the books and Bible stories that have a drawing of Jesus Christ.
As you can see, to misinterpret the Bible is just as bad as not to believe it.

The prices for minerals and soybeans are established by the laws of supply and demand and if Brazil increases its prices, China would probably find other countries to sell these goods cheaper. My point, is that the infusion of billions of dollars into the Brazilian economy has given this most despicable president license to openly flirt with corruption (and probably overly sleep with it). According to Brazilian ONGs, the price for staples such as rice, bean, sugar and meat have not had significant increases in the past four years.
And Murdoch is the last tycoon.

I think that instead of believing in ONGs,you should consult your family in Brazil about the prices (especially about dairy products and meat). China is defintely going to find other countries to buy from.

My question is:What is the reason for the infusion of Billions of dollars into the economy (BOVESPA),knowing fully well of the coruption ? Another question I have for you is: Will you be willing to put all your savings in BOVESPA and if not what percentage?

Who, by their right mind would have voted for the Redeemer statue as one of "The Seven Wonders of the World" remains a mystery. I trust it was a mix of mindless godbotherers and as mindless so-called patriots.

The art deco statue, a 20th century reference to the ancient myth of Christ, has in no way any artistic, architectural or engeneering merits, and is about as backward as its motif.

Its only redeeming feature is, that it visually co-exists relatively peacefully with its environment.

Getting the buildings and prices for habitats to right up there where Jesus is. The ones who cannot afford it shall stay right there in poverty. The Lord shall redeem them, eventually.

It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.
