Brazil Sets Half a Billion Dollars Apart for Nukes and Atomic Submarine PDF Print E-mail

Brazil's nuclear submarine model Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that Brazil will budget about half a billion US dollars over eight years to complete its nuclear program, including uranium enrichment technology, a third nuclear plant and finishing the building of a nuclear-powered submarine.

"I believe that this project could be the embryo for all we need from the point of view of nuclear energy and from the point of view of energy production," said Lula after visiting this week a navy research center in the southeastern state of São Paulo.

"If money was missing, there won't be any further shortage of money" to conclude the nuclear submarine on which Brazil has been working for the last two decades and which requires significant resources. "And who knows, if we could anticipate more funds the sub could be ready before since it's quite delayed."

"Brazil can give itself the luxury of being one of the few countries in the world to control all the technology of the uranium enrichment cycle," added Lula. "Why not dream big, and say we want to arrive at the possibility of having a nuclear submarine?"

The navy's nuclear program, begun in 1979, has already mastered part of the enrichment process. But it lags in developing and constructing a reactor entirely from Brazilian technology, revealed Navy Admiral Julio Soares de Moura Neto.

Lula has frequently touted nuclear power as a way to diversify Brazil's energy sources and meet growing demand in South America's largest nation and economy.

Last month, his government moved to resume work on a long-planned third nuclear power plant, Angra 3, which has been stalled since the 1980s by lack of funds.

Brazil's two operating nuclear plants, Angra 1 and Angra 2, have an installed capacity of about 2,000 megawatts. Angra 3 would raise capacity to 3,300 megawatts, at a cost of about US$ 3.6 billion, according to the Mines and Energy Ministry.

"We're going to finish Angra 3 and if necessary build more plants, and we're doing it because it's clean energy, this has been proved and tested in Brazil. It's safe and we have the technology, so why not take advantage of it?," said Lula.

Brazil's nuclear program began during a 1964-85 military dictatorship, and the ruling generals had secret plans to test an atomic bomb underground in the Amazon jungle. The idea was scrapped in 1990.

Silva's announcement came a day after the government's environmental protection agency gave preliminary approval to a US$ 10 billion to US$ 14.7 billion project to build two dams in the Amazon that would generate 6,450 megawatts, or 8% of current electricity demand.

....its nuclear program, including uranium enrichment technology, a third nuclear plant and finishing the building of a nuclear-powered submarine ??????

And what you can read later is.....
Angra 3 would raise capacity to 3,300 megawatts, at a cost of about US$ 3.6 billion, according to the Mines and Energy Ministry.

That doesnt include YET the uranium enrichment plant and the building of a nuclear-powered submarine EACH AT A COST OF OVER
500 Millions US$ !!!!

Brazilian maths ? Of course ! Worse you wont find anywhere in this planet !!!!!!!

I bet this will be even FAR worse than the costs of the Pan Anerican Games which ended 10 TIMES HIGHER THAN THE ORIGINAL COSTS ESTIMATES !!!!!

USE THE MONEY ON SCHOOLS , FOOD , HOSPITALS ,ROADS, DRINKING WATER

COMES TO MIND

what is worse
the man with a gallon of gas

or the one with the match

and if they laid the keel for the U Boat 20 years a go then scrap it also as the new technoligy will not fit in an old fram

if they pay me i will come down and show them how to build one as that is what one of my degree is in ,

i know i could save them money , as we all know that at least 60% of it will be stolen .

as i remember the last joint exersies with the US navy the US had to supply the brasilian navy fuel
as they were out of fuel money in there buget that year .

so brasil better hope you never have a war near the end of the year as you wont have gas to get there
of course they could use there cain fuel and gas turbins whitch would be cheeper in the short run 50 years or so
as why would brasil need a sub any way ,
unless it is a CHAVES in V type deal

try to wrap your mind around this

how many brasilians do you think can understand this much keep it safe on a moving ship under water
so this is an atom and the only way i can think to explain it to most of you

you thought there was a lot of empty space in the solar system. Well, there's even more nothing inside an atom. A hydrogen atom is only about a ten millionth of a millimeter in diameter, but the proton in the middle is a hundred thousand times smaller, and the electron whizzing around the outside is a thousand times smaller than THAT. The rest of the atom is empty. I tried to picture it, and I couldn't. So I put it to you  this way a pixel is scaled so that the smallest thing on it, the electron, is one pixel. That makes the proton,  a thousand pixels across, and the distance between them is... yep, fifty million pixels (not a hundred million, because we're only showing the radius of the atom. ie: from the middle to the edge). If your monitor displays 72 pixels to the inch, then that works out to eleven miles -

I recommend trying to scroll from here to the right a screen at a time, just to see how long it takes the little thumb in the scrollbar to move visibly. True masochists can try to scroll through the whole eleven miles - but the scenery along the way is pretty bleak.

I used to think that things like rocks and buildings and my own skeleton were fairly solid. But they're made up of atoms, and atoms, as you can see here, contain so little actual material that they can barely be said to exist.

We are all phantoms.

Costa do Sauipe, not far from where I live, ran 10X over budget!! ACM gotta eat!

I build things, I know that things run over budget, more times than not. But when one starts getting into 10X over budget, either you've completely changed the project, hence need to completely revamp the budget and get approval, or it is a case of incompetence or corruption, either way is not good.
To Bo......

I am glad that it is not me who wrote what you say !!!!
Idiots like Paulo Cunha or Magnu the idiot.....would have disagreed !

What makes me laugh the most is that in one part of the article (the start) they talk about US$ 500 million for 3 projects, and later mentions
that 1 project alone will cost over 3 times more than the US$ 500 billion.

Brazilian maths or Brazilians cheatings and lies ? OR BOTH ???????

And that is BEFORE the unknown yet costs OVERRUN !!!!!!!!!

In my view Brazilians are truly drunk addicted to......ethanol ! that is probably what makes them so....IDIOTS !!!!!
Oooops....typing mistake.....
