Plane that Crashed in Brazil Was Flying with Broken Equipment For Days PDF Print E-mail
Written by José Wilson Miranda
Friday, 20 July 2007

Wing of Airbus that exploded As revealed by Jornal Nacional, Brazil's main prime-time TV news program, and confirmed by TAM Airlines, the Airbus that exploded in São Paulo after a failed landing, killing all 186 aboard plus  an unknown number of people on the ground, was flying with a fault in the equipment which was meant to slow the jet down.

The A320 plane had its right-side reverse thruster broken at least since Friday, July 13. On July 16, a Monday, the day before the tragedy, the aircraft had had trouble stopping and almost went off the runway at the same Congonhas airport. The trouble with the A320 had been detected by the plane's electronic checking system.

TAM's president, Marco Antonio Bologna, and the airline's vice president Ruy Amparo confirmed that the reverse thruster wasn't working and had been turned off. According to them, however, this didn't represent any danger to the plane, since the jet's manual in these cases only recommend that the failed equipment be checked in ten days, but doesn't tell to stop flying the aircraft.

Bologna and Amparo, however, didn't confirm the information given by Jornal Nacional that the Airbus had trouble landing the day before the crash. According to the news show, the A320 commander had told airport authorities that the tarmac was slippery and that he had a hard time trying to stop the plane upon landing on July 16.

It was about 6:45 pm on Tuesday when the Airbus that had taken off at 5:16 pm from Porto Alegre in the South of Brazil, tried to land in Congonhas and instead skidded off the runway crossing the busy Washington Luís avenue and slamming into a TAM building where some employees were working at the time. The plane burst into flames which spread to neighboring structures. 188 deaths have been confirmed until now, but the work of rescuing bodies continues.

In 1996, a reverse thruster failure was pointed as the reason for another crash in the same airport. At that time, a Fokker-100 also belonging to TAM crashed over a residential area, a few seconds after takeoff. killing 99 people.

The failure of a reverse thruster is always a security risk, according to Roberto da Mota Girardi, a professor of aerodynamics at the renowned Aeronautics Technological Institute (ITA). "This is dangerous," Girardi told reporters, "especially in a short tarmac as the one in Congonhas.".

A plane without a reverse thruster would need a bigger runway to stop, informed the ITA professor. "I'm not familiar with the Airbus's operation manual or the details of TAM's maintenance system, but it seems odd that they would allow a period of ten days to evaluate the problem."

The reverse thruster is the aircraft's main brake during landing. When it's turned on the plane's turbines flow is inverted, causing the aircraft to quickly lower its speed.  Only then the landing gear's mechanical brake system is activated.

Brazil needs a mental revolution.
written by João PInga, July 20, 2007
Bo you know enough, as do many foreigners who visit brazil and see the blatantly obvious signs of chaos. It’s just the masses that are blind to their own undoing. Keep the population uneducated, with access to cheap beer and cachaca, free TV with mind numbingly and torturously banal programs and FOOTCHY BALLY 24 hours a day and you create a nation of politically impotent and malleable, chesty pounding “I’m Brazilian hear me roar” fools.

50,000 murdered each year, 45,000 traffic fatalities every 365 days, uncompleted major multi billion dollar projects, a new scandal each day forgotten the following, politicians immune to anything including murder, prostitution being one of Brazil’s more successful exports, and now, planes, literally falling from the skies. The writing has been on the wall for sometime and the solutions to all these problems are easily accessible, however here in “Crazylandia” politicians would rather see millions continue suffer (but feign concern) than give up their personal winter homes in the south of France or in Miami. And as long as the beer is cheap and Brazil wins another Gold medal at Pan, why should the population care?

Nothing short of a total and complete MENTAL revolution on the part of the Brazilians majority will ever help this country move forward. But it aint gong to happen.

To the accident: Lula (the Teflon president) and his cronies will scapegoat everyone they can, TAM will scapegoat everyone they can, Airport authorities will scapegoat everyone they can, actually, you can picture all the key players pointing fingers at one another, and Brazilians will forget about this in a few days.

Sadly, the cycle continues.

My concern is that given the size of the Congonhas airport, every system related to landing has to work properly, brakes, thrust reversers, proper minimum thrust/rpm, everything. Even if there is no placarded, non-functional system at the time of takeoff, what if I am a passenger on an Airbus A320/233 that is landing at Congonhas in the rain and some system becomes non-functional on short final? Is it worth the risk?

In Brasil, especially in government and business, no one ever takes responsibility for anything; when there's a problem, it's always someone elses fault, it's "there responsibility, not ours", so getting a problem fixed usually takes forever, if at all.
In Brasil, it's corruption, corruption, corruption everywhere.
Regarding TAM's president confirming that the crashed plane's reverse thruster wasn't working but, in effect, "não problema", especially in light of Congonhas's dangerously short runway and slick, slippery surface when wet(and still ungrooved!).......I'm just speechless! I'd say that's criminal irresponsibility....
I sure hope that TAM is sued into bankuptcy.
I've flown in and out of Congonhas a number of times but just wasn't aware of how life threatening that experience really is.

The life of a first world citizen is worth a million bucks. That would be two hundred million Tam would pay out. How much is a life of a Brazilian worth?

The class strata of those that fly in Brazil are such that they will not tolerate the death of there kith and kin to go unprosecuted. There is no one above class, above the law perhaps, but not above class and the interests of class seeking justice.

The tickests on Tam should be imprinted with Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware).

Oh Honest, your being a bitch again. smilies/cheesy.gif If you put 10 people in a room and 9 are saying this was an accident waiting to happen because 1. the government lifted an order banning certain aircraft from landing at Congonhas (how much do you think that judge was bribed to lift that? And yes I know that the A320 was not part of that ban) , 2. Didn't finish the construction on the runway (grooves) and opened it up to air tradffic anyway, 3. 2 planes skidded on that runway just the day before, 4. the airport has had a reputation for being an accident waiting to happen for years because of the short runways and poor urban planning, 5. knew they should close it but didn't because of the economic impact (now that sounds like an imperialist gringo move doesn't it? if that happened here, i predict you would say "all you Americans care about is money") and lastly the Brazilian government steals all the money that should be used for infrastructure as a whole (the root of most problems), its usually the 9 that are right and the one radical that is not. You, my lady, are the radical. The odd chicken out. So what does Lula know now? Whats the new fact? That the plane had a reverse thruster that didn't function? And that makes it all ok for everything to go on as is, and scapegoat TAM this time? Damn, no Americans to blame! I think most of the people on this site, Americans and Brazilians, love Brazil and want to see things change for the better. I care that my in-laws have the life that I think they deserve in Brazil. You are the predator. You want and accept scapegoats to feed your Brazilian national pride. It makes things much easier for you psychologically. Your a smart girl that is blinded by this. Sad. Why do you accept it? This is the same situation as the GOL flight that crashed in the Amazon. Cause and affect. Its not one cause, its a combination in both situations perpetuated by bad morale judgement, misguided logic and in your face corruption.

Did you expect otherwise from your Filthy politicians and bureaucrats ????

Furthermore the SP airport capacity is 12 millions passengers/year.....but there were 18 millions in 2006.
Did you expect an appropriate re-sizing ? Come on, your politicians responsible FOR NOT voting more budget, have simply put more
money....IN THEIR OWN POCKETS !
Otherwise where would they take such money...if not from the Federal/States/Municipalities budgets ?

Whats the new fact?

The new facts are that the President of ANAC and the Assistant Director both have been condecorated with Gold medals today for having contributed their exemplary services to the Civil Aviation of this country.TAM´s President has acknoledged that there was a problem with the Thrust Reverser of the ill fated plane and the company followed the advice of the manufacturers to keep it under observation for 10 days. But it crashed before then.

So it looks right now that the French are going to take up the heat, for a change.

As for your beloved friend Honest, may be she is looking forward to replace Denise Abreu as the Deputy Director of ANAC? (In case you didnt know, it your FAA).

An extremely astute observation and Cost/Benefit analysis. Why rebuild the terminal first almost turning it into a shopping center and do a half assed job on the main runway years later? So according to this commentator, 200 millions of investment is tiny compared to the return over the next couple of years?

A point to ponder.

I think thesee suckers are realy disgusting, but we can't be blind to the facts.
Besides, I'm happy they will need to aim their weapons to someone else and take back a lot of sh*t that has alrealy been said...
I see this tragedy as a warning:
Brasilians need to learn how it is when you try to become a "major player" in the world.
Being a "major player" means having more responsibilities, more decency, more respect to people, more respect to life, more respct to the laws, but this is not what anyone can see around in this country, since a long and distant past... Unfortunately, what the whole globe sees is much corruption, unequality, violence, and almost none respect to the laws, specially by those who are entitled to enforce them. These things simply do not match and until this equation is not resolved, Brazil simply can't be big.
If Brazil wants to be a "major player" it's more than time to start doing its basic homework and ironically, this tragedy may offer the country a chance: Honestly prosecuting the many responsible for this terrible accident, will expose the guts of the corrupt "system" that run the nation.
PT's leftist/nationalist government is always blamed for everything, but they are the most inexpressive apendix of this terribe "system" that dominates and contaminates the whole scenario, not only in Brazil, but in the whole world.
Since the temperature is kind a hot in the country these days, I wish this tragedy could ignite the tension and bring something new (and good) to the scenario.

What is it that Joe Sharkey likes to say....down the rabbit hole...

Not really. It is certainly not a rabbit hole like he likes to project. Besides, he was just a passer by,got a free ride on the Legacy and unfortunately got involved in the accident and survived (incredibly lucky). According to him, when the Legacy landed at Cachimbo airbase, the crew and the passegengers virtually ran into the arms of our brave Air Persons who treated them well and housed them in their barracks. What pisses me off is he does not acknowledge the hospitality of our Air Force personnel and lack of his air travel experience in Brasil. He seems to judge all our of us as "farinha do mesmo Saco", which is unacceptable to intellegent Brasilians (myself included).

I think the real people who can criticize Congonhas is the ones who have flown through it, regardless of their nationalities and I dont think Joe Sharkey did it.

btw, I watched our beloved President giving a speech on the TV at 8 P.M. sharp. He talked for 5 minutes and said "Nothing". Hope Honesty loved his speech.

OK that was unfair for me to say. But the guy (sharkey) is from Phildelphia. I can hear the accent when i read his writing (meaning that New Yorkers and Philadelphians are notoriously harsh in their criticism). He's harsh and I didn't agree with him all the time. I think your right about his tendency to judge all of Brazilians as if they all possess the same mindset. I know how that makes me feel when I see that on this blog so I hear you. I think he tried to be accurate with his facts though. I flew into Congonhas last year. The only time I did. Noticed the city was really right there. And I criticize from what I hear, I didn't have any bad experience there.

Hope you do understand that Joe Sharkey in referring to "Down the rabbit hole" is making reference to the chaos in the Alice in Wonderland story. I do think almost everyone who takes the trouble to enter comments is not doing so just to criticize Brazil, but to hope for much better for a country that should be great. Maybe just unloading frustration. For many decades I have thought of Brazil as a great country although I have never visited there. I am saddened by what I have learned in the last ten months. I fly often on Embraer passenger aircraft and think they are wonderful (just like the Legacy!). Do wish the Brazilian citizens could get the country straightened out. No one else can! Brazilian Leadership

Thank you, O Velhino, for the kind invitation. BTW, I am an Aeronautical Engineer myself. Retired now, of course. May not have enough years left to make it to Brazil. Believe me, those Embraer Engineers and their alma mater need no one making excuses for them! They are great!

I think everyone who writes all these responses is saying the same thing, just in different ways. All see the potential for Brazil and want so much for it to be realized. A nation like Brazil has all the leadership it needs to solve all of its problems. They just need to stand up and be recognized and supported by those around them who understand the real problems. They do not need to be greatly controversial. Just lead in doing what needs to be done. Lets hope they start soon! RM

It's kind of hard for Joe Sharkey not to form an opinion on his EXPERIENCE here in Brazil....and it wasn't good! And unforutunately, being a gringo that's lived here for a decade, I can tell you first hand, and also by the hundreds, if not thousands, of other gringos that I've known or know that have either travelled here, or lived here, or currently live here, it's not unusual here in Brazil for gringo's to have f**ked up experiences in Brazil....let's not go into that now as it's an entirely different issue in which I could write a book.

Joe Sharkey witnessed first-hand, literally within minutes of landing the Legacy, that the american pilots were being blamed for the crash.....Not only had an investigation yet to begin but...the dead bodies had literally yet to stop twitching! Now come on Velhino, who in their right f**king mind does that? And this wasn't some blinded by patriotism, american hating, low-level a*****e beaurocrat, no, it was the minister of defense for the entire f**king country! Mix that in with the numerous others, supposedly professional people, numerous politicians, that have been trying to railroad the american pilots for no other reason than simply 1. They were involved (doesn't matter if their actions or inactions contributed to the accident or not), and 2. They're foreigners(and even worse, Americans).

I've witnessed this behavior here in Brazil firsthand, especially over the last 4-5 years. There are factions of brazilians that don't care to hear any of the facts, especially if those facts are going to be detrimental to the image of Brazil and/or Brazilians. They would much rather ignore them, refute them in the face of all evidence, testimony and logic, and allow a dangerous situation to continue to exist, and keep this crazy, irrational, so-called "brazilian pride" in check.

Have you seen some of the responses this guy has gotten in his blog?? He's had death threats for god's sake! That's inexcusable! Maybe one day when Americans wake up out of their slumber, if they ever really start to pay attention to Brazil and the way Brazil has acted and reacted towards americans, the american gov't., and american policy, maybe we'll start to react in turn, I can only hope. Because I'd betcha some attitudes would start changing around here real f**king fast.

Well, Lucas R., I perceive that you may be unaware of what the American Dream really is. I won´t define it here, but there is another American Dream for foreigners, illustrated by photos of guys in Tijuana looking across the fence at the USA. Go ahead and dream, the Border Patrol can´t monitor their aspirations, but the USA is under no obligation to help them make their wishes come true either. May I repeat once more the observation that Americans don´t really care what the rest of the world thinks about any subject, except that the Liberal Elite does care. So appealing to World Opinion will get you less than nowhere with most Americans. I hate to say that and it´s terribly insensitive and unfair, but also truer than a Ford Motorsports aluminum driveshaft.

The real and honest American Dream should be everywhere, to everybody. The American Dream is what any citizen in any country in the world -Africa, Americas, Europe, anywhere- should dream about his or her own country. It could then be called Mexican Dream, Brasilien Dream or Kenyan Dream, etc. But USA insists in having just on dream on the the planet: their own, and reserved for just them own. This is the key issue of the USA policy towards the rest of the world, and that is what I'm saying should be updated.
I had that American Dream one day and I made it to come true by visiting and stayind in the USA for a long period of time. Those years were at the end of that American Dream: Vietnam War, Watergate, John Lennon "detetion", and so on.
Now that the Dream is about over, USA insists in keeping other countries from having their own Dream. One of the technics is spreading confusion among them. This caos in the Brasilian air traffic is a clear demonstration of this intervention. There are too many professional "mind makers" intervening in the destiny of this crucial sector in the Brasilien economy. It all started when a simply transponder button was found to be off, perhaps intentionaly turned off by the american pilots, that caused the first big tragedy. From that moment on, the Brasilian skyies have become a nightmare, from one moment to the other.
In a natural sequence -or maybe if the two Embraer jet pilots were not americans- all this nightmare wouln'd ever happen.
I remember reading in this site -months ago, after the first accident when the two american pilots were still under custody in Brazil-, someone saying more or less like this: If they don't let the pilots to fly back to the USA they will start seeing their flying systems going crazy...
The flight systems (and controllers as well) went crazy, the american pilots returned to the USA, but the system, the controllers and now the management of a major air company, are still crazy...
I understand the (political incorrect) gesture of one top President Lula's aid, extensively shown in the news and in the YouTube. It shows the level of saturation the "professional" criticism to this country and it's legal government has reached.

written by O Velhino, July 21, 2007

RM

Thanks for the kind words about our Meritocrats.Very nice of you both. Cant write long comments this week end, because we have to give attention to a 77 year old American ,whom we have known for over the past 30 years. I will check with him about what he thinks about the whole thing.Great week end. Oh, Ralph, you being an Aeronautical Engineer, keep track of what is happening wrt TAM A320.

My, this is the longest blog I've see. Lots of interesting responses. Before it shuts down, I want to comment one more time about the TAM tragedy. I think it illustrates a lot. Prsident Lula was quoted as saying, "There will be a thorough investigation." Yes, I'm sure there will be. To me that says, "We will find who to blame."

I wish he had said or added, "We will take immediate steps to correct the situation so that it is very unlikely to happen again." Realistically it can happen again, but a longer runway, grooving and a new airport certainly will greatly reduce the chances it does. It looks like those who can make it happen will do so. I wish the political statements would reflect that attitude; that is, "We can do it and we will!"

Best to all, whether you agree or not!

Ralph, couldnt help replying! This is precisely what I think .Sorry,it happened and that we will ensure that it doesnt happen again. The problem with him is he is still in the opposition and wants to govern with his cumpanheiros who will always be in the oppostion.

What made me sad was that the mouring period of 3 days was not even over. This guy had to make present medals to the ANAC executives for their services to the Civil Aviation. A sick joke indeed. Just wait till Monday, when the Brazilian reporters pick up the story!

Yeah Lucas, couldn't agree more. It's all a big conspiracy and Brazil is on top of the "shit list". I think the U.S. gov't. also has pioneered mind-control methods and has had the entire brazilian congress under it's spell robbing and stealing for it for several decades now!

Evil wizards they are....think the same one as in Toto, Dorothy, and Oz!!!

Bo, maybe Lucas R is on to something. Why did the black boxes go to the USA? Doubters will cite the fact that since Pratt and Whitney is U.S. (and Swiss) based, the US has the right to be in on the investigation, but maybe there IS a conspiracy.

A plane from the US had to turn back yesterday rather than procede to Brazil, and two American planes enroute from South Brazil to the USA had to land in Manaus, according to news reports, since the lights went out on Cindacta 4 and the backup generators didn´t come on line. Another report said it was the comm radios. Another said it was the radar. American AIrlines flight 962 from SP to Dallas had to land at Manaus and wait more than three hours. An experience akin to waterboarding. I´ve gotta go there next week. Not looking forward to it.

Power doesn´t just go out on its own. Generators in the Amazon don´t just refuse to start. Semi-conductors don´t just cease to semi-conduct. Sounds like Mind Control, as Lucas suggests, or other high-tech nefarious sabotage techniques.

What ever it is, rest assured that the authorities will find out and put a halt to it. Unless they have been subject to Mind Control as well. In that case, all bets are off. In that case take the bus or the boat, depending on where you need to go.

Thanks for the reassuring and positive comment. We trust in our Minister of Defense. Fearless Pires.Mind Control? He has a Doctoral degree in this and Lucas needs not fear. Our brave Pires will protect us all from those odious foreigners .

As for your trip next week to Dallas, have no fear. Pires and those two High Level executives of ANAC who got the medals would have solved the problem,by the time you leave. If you cant make it,you better "Relaxar e Gozar" and wait for the brand new airport to be built in S.Paulo to be completed.

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

Joined hands The small, coastal town of Condé is located just a twenty minute's drive from João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

  • Lula Is About to Fulfill His Wish of Getting His Good Friend Chavez in Mercosur

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). After two and a half years, the protocol was approved by the legislative bodies of Argentina and Uruguay, and as of now it may be only days away from being ratified by the continent's economic megalith, Brazil.

  • Child Labor Went Down in Brazil, But 5 Million Underage Workers Are Still Way Too Many

Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.
