Brazilians Go to the Streets and Call for Lula Impeachment PDF Print E-mail

Marches with Out Lula banner Thousands of Brazilians marched through São Paulo, Brazil's largest city, and other capital cities Saturday in a protest against corruption scandals that have involved members of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's government.

At least 2,000 demonstrators, many of them wearing black clothing and red clown noses, gathered on São Paulo's Avenida Paulista. Similar protests took place in the capital Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. They carry banner saying "Lula, get out" and "He who has a mouth, boos Lula."

Corruption charges have brought down several government officials connected to President Lula in recent years. The recent protests come in the wake of Brazil's deadliest air accident, which killed 100 and is blamed by many on government inaction on dealing with the air traffic crisis in the country.

Last May, Energy Minister Silas Rondeau denied any wrongdoing but resigned after allegations linking him to a financial scandal involving public-works project.

In another case, the leader of Brazil's senate, Renan Calheiros, was accused of taking payoffs from a construction company. He has denied the allegations, and remains in office.

Separate accusations of political dirty tricks and illegal campaign spending forced Mr. da Silva to fire his campaign manager, Ricardo Berzoini, prior to the first round of last year's presidential election.

Was impeached for much less. Mr Bin Lula, however, has the support of a large part of the population. From a legal point of view, he is impeachable as hell. The question is that no one in the political system will even suggest that for fear of commiting political suicide. So we are stuck with this guy, even though he is criminally responsible for a load of crap, and is a weaselly, lying coward (no to mention a drunkard).
Democracy is the best option there is (despite PT and Bin Lula trying to subvert it all the time), but it does hve its hiccups (Lula, Bush, Berlusconi, Chavez, Morales... The list goes on. Even Hitler came to power initially through popular vote.). So unless he does something awesomely, massively, absurdly wrong, we're stuck with him till next election.
What we have to do is make sure none of his gang continue in power then.

......2000 demonstrators in a city of well over 10 millions people.

A JOKE !

During the vote buying scandal, there was TWICE demonstrators in Brasilia. One group, less than 10'000 people. was for Lula impeachment, and the second group, also less than 10'000 people, were pro Lula.
What happened next ? Lula is still President and was even re-elected. And Your Senate, in a secret vote, pardoned all those found guilty
by the investigators. Most were also re-elected !

Simple demonstration that at the population level, at the (IN)justice level, at the political opposition level......no one really care.
