Brazil's New Air Airports Chief Involved in Scandal with Country's First Astronaut PDF Print E-mail

New airport chief in Brazil, Sergio Gaudenzi The head of Brazil's airports authority has been replaced in the wake of the country's worst air crash last month. Jose Carlos Pereira will be replaced by the president of the Brazilian space agency, Sergio Maurício Brito Gaudenzi.

Some 199 people died when an airliner skidded off a runway and crashed into a building at São Paulo's Congonhas airport.

Mr Pereira is the second top official to be sacked over the crash, after the defense minister also lost his job.

It was the new defense minister, Nelson Jobim, who requested that Mr Pereira resign and who announced his resignation. The defense ministry supervises civil aviation in Brazil.

Gaudenzi, who should take office this week, is being sued by Brazil's Audit Court (TCU) for his acts as head of the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB).

The TCU argues that he acted illegally when the AEB paid 16 million reais (about US$ 8 million) to the Russia Space Agency to take Brazilian first astronaut, Marcos Pontes, into space, in 2006.

The airports authority, Infraero, has been criticized for allowing the Congonhas runway to be used even though it had not been "grooved" after being surfaced. Grooving helps water escape the surface of the runway.

It had been raining heavily on 17 July, the day of the crash - that is one of several possible contributory factors being analyzed by investigators.

The disaster was the second major air tragedy in Brazil in the space of less than a year. In late 2006, a Gol passenger plane and an executive jet collided over the Amazon, killing 154 people.

Brazil's New Air Airports Chief Involved in Scandal with Country's First Astronaut
written by João da Silva, August 06, 2007
Lets not be too dramatic and accuse everyone of corruption. Col.Pontes was trained at NASA and a qualified astronaut. Because of the problems with the Space shuttles, he had to take a ride on Soyuz and of course someone had to pay for it and Col.Pontes is not rich enough to be a space "Tourist". Gaudenzi ,being the Headman of our Space program, used his Managerial judgement to pay the Russians and now TCU is questioning his decision.

I wonder why our Military personnel and the ITA,IME graduates and engineers from other Brazilian universities are being massacared by the press.

I would like to give a warm welcome to Gaudenzi and wish him all the best. Hope he is bolder than Brig.Pereira to get rid of the parasites in INFRAERO. Also Jobim has the balls to fire those 4 directors of ANAC, who got the medals for their stupenduous contributions to better our aviation.

I had a boyfriend that went to IME in Rio, very good engineering school, extremely difficult entry exam and only the brightest kids get in (being rich helps, but intelligence is something different). I guess the press needs to pick on those constructing/working hard towards the future of Brazil. They should question the real "Ladroes" in Brasilia. This is what I like to call witch hunt, Col. Pontes, as you said, was trained here and is a qualified astronaut. We all know that the Russians need funds for the space program, and I don't see a problem paying for Col. Ponte's fee. About two years ago, the BBC did a program on business transparency in Brazil, and the outcome was poor. Anyone can get away by paying others "favores", we do need more transparency when doing business transactions, otherwise everyone will be judged as being corrupt. We all know that not all Brazilians are corrupt, but "jeitinho" has been the national motto for centuries.

You used the correct term "Witch Hunt". I get upset, when I hear unnecessary military bashing and everyone in uniform is considered to be a potential dictator. The TCU is now questioning that Gaudenzi authorized the payment for Col.Pontes´s space trip and the members dont seem to be interested in his contribution to Brazil. The same thing happened in the case of Col.Osires da Silva (a good man too). The whole thing stinks and it seems to be politically incorrect to even shake hands with a "Milico".Lets be honest, the money we paid for Col.Pontes was a fraction of the amount that we spent on PAN games, which by the way cost 8 times the original budget.

Brig.Pereira, who quit his post as the President of INFRAERO is another rational soul and he inherited a corrupt infrastructure from Carlos Wilson. I dont know if you were still in Brazil and remember this idiot. He is a total jerk like Renan.Such people are our elected reps. What a shame.

As for "jeitinho", the miltary tried to put an end to it and they didnt succeed . I think this jeitinho will continue. What to do?

here we go...

We are under dictatorship...we are OBLIGATED to vote , by not complying with the rules set by our brilliant Justica Federal we face fines or jail time. Unless we have a decent suffrage movement, whatever we have is not considered a true democratic government. Plain and simple, we are not different from other South American countries (Chaves, Moralles).

SPACE TOURIST

SPACE TOURIST

Why in a country that has people starving, children scavenging in city dumps for food, can you spend 6 million Dollars to be a space tourist? America needs to cut back on the massive spending of NASA. WE have people in need right here in America. America has the honor of being the first to leave trash on the Moon, we spent all that money and then stopped, because the Soviet Union did not compete with us.

Why must Brazil have an astronaut? How about a Democracy first.

Jay, it is an interesting point you are making, since you are implicit in saying that all countries have to take care of this planet first before exploring the space. Am I right? There must be reasons to build a space station and look for another planet which is inhabiltable. Are the preparing for the ultimate end of our planet Earth and tghe survivors can move to another planet? I was always and still am curious about the reasons for spending so much money on space exploration.

Only makes sense if it is for the purpose of creation of knowledge and new technology, that, in the future, might help new products to be created around here. That's reason enough. We shouldn't halt research and development just because someone is hungry, because that would be the fastest way to commit economical suicide and, then, lots of more people would be hungry.

Very good reason and thanks. Being an engineer myself, I agree with you. That is the reason why I didnt mind the Russians being paid 16 M reais to send Col.Pontes into Space. When the Chinese and the Indians are sending their own astronauts, why not us?

Of course, you, me and plenty of others would have been happier, if the Russians had taken some members of São Paulo Forum" without charging extra and putting them in the orbit. Strictly speaking, I am thinking of Cost/Benefit!

Joao, Renan is nothing compare to our new traitor.
written by Shelly, August 07, 2007
Renan is the biggest actor in Brazilia. Did you see when he was being questioned that he played "victim" and put his "soul and heart" out there for everyone to see? "I have nothing to hide". What we need is a big ass incinerator and put all senators, deputies, mayors... together with the worst MOTHER F of Rio de Janeiro: INSPETOR SERGIO LUIZ de ALBUQUERQUE burn them, and send these idiots on their way to hell. Public funds "mismanagement" should be considered treason. Did you see the news about this a*****e? You gotta check this out, this is why Brazil needs to change it's laws-traitors like these should go to the gauntlet. His job description is to "protect and serve the public" and he stabs, not only his co-workers on the back, but all Cariocas. He is worse than the drug dealers of Rocinha and this scumbag should be on his way to "Cemiterio do Caju".

All these idiots are coitadinhos and sigh.. sigh...sigh., we the blunt speaking people are the Villains. The best profession, right now is to be an elected official. You get good pay, additional perqs and you get a large percentange from the deals you make with the businesses (they say it is generally 20%).

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.
