Brazil's Biggest Street Party Overseas Ready to Roll in NY PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ernesto Barteldes
Thursday, 23 August 2007

Brazil Day in New York Differently from many of the ethnic communities around the New York City area, expat Brazilians do not hold parades in celebration of their Independence Day, which takes place on September 7th. Curiously enough, there are military parades back home, even though the country has been a democracy for over 20 years.

Instead of marching down 5th Avenue, what happens is a huge party around the Little Brazil Street area where Brazilian TV celebrities and pop music stars are showcased at a large stage on Sixth Avenue.

The usual street vendors also populate the area, but on this day dollar Thai, falafel and Italian sausage stands will find fierce competition from vendors who peddle Brazilian delicacies such as acarajé, coxinha, feijoada and churrasco.

The Brazilian Day Festival, which has been happening regularly since 1982, congregates over a million people who party hard but also play nice. Many come from communities in Newark and Boston, and sometimes they even charter buses for the occasion.

Past New York Police Department numbers show a small number of summonses and arrests, despite the fact that the crowded neighborhood bars begin selling their caipirinhas (Brazilian margaritas) early on. The delis also make a healthy profit by selling beer out of coffee cups - the police generally ignore that, as long as people behave.

Critics of the festival have said that the festival does not reflect Brazilian culture, but I would disagree with them saying that the event has everything to do with Brazilians, their fun-loving nature, and the pride that they have of their land, even if they are thousands of miles away.

The event itself has become a bit overblown ever since Globo TV took over its musical direction, flying in stars from their roster but also guaranteeing A-list attractions for their simulcast on cable,

This year's musical lineup, which generally changes every year, includes rock band Jota Quest (whose name was inspired by the 1970s cartoon), Axé Music act Asa de Águia, who has scored a large number of hits in Brazil since the 1990s, and Bruno e Marrone, who recently were almost impossible to get off the airwaves with their "Nossa Senhora do Brasil," a tune they recorded with pop Catolic priest Marcelo Rossi.

Revelers who want to get a good place near the stage are advised to get there early. NYPD crowd-control officers are pretty strict when it comes to that. Open containers are against the law in New York City, and anyone who tries to defy that will receive at least a citation.

There are plenty of bars selling beer, caipirinhas and other drinks (at premium prices); the temperature is always hot, so keep hydrated. I have seen families with small kids sweating it out all day there. That is clearly not advisable, as crowds there can get rowdy and loud.

Local clubs are having several after-parties once the street celebration is over, in case you are still in the mood for that later.

On the following day, the Brazilian neighborhood of Astoria in the nearby borough of Queens, the local community will also be celebrating their heritage by joining a long-running fair that happens in the location.

They will be adding some of their color by including typical foods, dance, capoeira demonstrations and also presentations by local bands. It is - intentionally - something done in a much smaller scale, but organizers promise a cultural, family-friendly event suitable to the Brazilian presence in the area.

I'd say it's both; homesick Brazilians join curious Americans studk in town for the holiday; the presence of Hispanic and African immigrants is also noticeable

Your numbers (stats) are generally spot-on. However, you screwed up badly on "...that such a Foreign party.....COULD NOT HAPPEN IN.....BRAZIL !!!!!! Brazilians are way way way.....TOO MUCH XENOPHOBS !!!! "
Let me enlighten you.I'll begin with the Oktoberfest in Blumenau, which is the largest German-culture festival in the world after Munich's original Oktoberfest. Then there's the Italian feast of Santa Aquerupita, in the Italian neighborhood of Bela Vista, in São Paulo, whic celebrates Italian culture for a whole month! There's also the Japanese festival in the japanese neighborhood of Liberdade, in São Paulo, (Brazil has THE largest Japanese cummunity outside of Japan in the world), besides the weekly fairs in that wonderful place, which looks like a slice of Japan plopped down in SP (I have been to Japan for a month and a half, so I should know). There are feasts which celebrate Ukranian culture in the south; São Paulo celebrates Irish culture on St. Patrick's day; etc.
Brazilians unfortunate and unjustified xenophoby is targeted mostly at America, stimulated by the mindless left-wing orphans from the Soviet era.
We even like the Swiss! smilies/grin.gifIf you started a Swiss festival here, with your great chocolates, and foods, and knives and watches, it would be a resounding success!People would love it(especially the food) smilies/grin.gif
The moronic mindless xenophobes have a one-track mind, which can only repeat "down with the USA".

Have you noticed any Brazilian Ministry of Tourism and Embratur presence there? They have been spending truckloads of money to try and present a fairy-tale, idealized version of our country to gullible foreigners...(check out Brazil Week in New York Central Station's Vanderbilt Hall...).Are thier jackboots and heavy-handed presence explicit there, or camouflaged by Globo(which is also a Ministry accomplice)?

Sorry....Brazilian Dude....!
written by CH.C., August 24, 2007
You are right, I was wrong ! But not so wong because "your" Japaneses are in fact Brazilians...by now .....with a Brazilian passport!
You see when there is a soccer World cup, for example, the Brazilian local community in my city, 60 % of them illegals, the other40 % legally here, do a big feast in public parks with large TV screens and we look at the matches together ! We dance together !We have drinks together.
I am not counting the few Brazilians who changed their passports and became Swiss. They are Swiss...by definition....the same as yourJapaneses with a Brazilian passports are......Brazilians !

But why should Swisess do a feast in Brazil with chocolates, knives and watches ?
I thought that Brazilian Dude has an aversion against Swiss watches, since you prefer Chinese watches !
Short memory ? smilies/smiley.gif
Or do you expect that we distribute them free.....after having paid ourselves your heavy import taxes ?
Hmmmmm....... !!!!

for your info, in my city, Geneva, 50 % of the Legal residents DONT HAVE A SWISS PASSPORT !
This doesnt include the thousands of foreign diplomats with all our International Agencies, and doesnt include the far more than
40'000 illegals coming from all over the world : Africa, Asia, Russia and all Eastern Europe countries, and Latin American countries.
The Brazilian community here is quite large. We have no problem with them. On Saturdays, a few of them even make Capoeira shows in the shopping streets !
And funny that none (to my knowedge) Brazilians churascerrias in my city sell...... Brazilian meat ! And we know it since by law the country of the meat origin must be written on the menus card !

Ch.c is the one with a nasty problem of short memory.I dont recall you ever mentioning about your aversion for Swiss Watches. It is a malicious propaganda against a simple Brazilian Dude like you, which of course is unacceptable to us.

You see when there is a soccer World cup, for example, the Brazilian local community in my city, 60 % of them illegals, the other40 % legally here, do a big feast in public parks with large TV screens and we look at the matches together ! We dance together !We have drinks together.

It does sound surrealistic to me.I cant inagine ch.c, involving himself in cultural activities with the Brazilians in Geneva. May be he has fallen in love with Luriam.

On Saturdays, a few of them even make Capoeira shows in the shopping streets !

Unbelievable, that he appreciates these shows.

And funny that none (to my knowedge) Brazilians churascerrias in my city sell...... Brazilian meat ! And we know it since by law the country of the meat origin must be written on the menus card !

It is good that the Swiss dont import meat from Brazil.Very nice of them so as not to jack up the price for domestic consumers.

Dude, have you noticed that he hasnt made any comments about the Brazilian economy during this week ? Love is in the air (Luriam & Ch.c) and I am closely observing the progress on Rede Globo.

Alzheimer's?
The point about passports or nationalities is moot. The thing is that the celebrations are about another country's culture...WTF do legals/illegals have to do with it?There is no xenophobia related to those statistics... Your original statement was about feasts....

Sorry Junkie but,
YOU are the one who wrote in a previous post to Braziléian Dude : "I understand your aversion to Swiss watches and clocks" and then you referred to Chinese watches ! SHORT MEMORY......IDIOT ?

As to what you can imagine about myself is just worthless and of no value. Even if you think as you wrote once "I should quit the forum because it is only for a small group of educated people" SHORT MEMORY AGAIN....IDIOT ?

You are such an idiot that you liked what AES wrote a while ago. Even when he said HE sold gold at US$ 820.- when such a price was never ever reached.....in the last 25 years !

Simple demonstration that the most idiot between you and me......is certainly not me !

As to my own relations, in businesses or private, they are certainly more diversified and worth more than yours.
this doesnt include yet my clients money !!!!! Hey Hey !
Yesssssss.....idiot Joao.....I am managing US$ 400 millions.
Ohhhh....this is a very small size "investment boutique"........HERE !!!!!

I always smile when Brazilians caress their navel.........with their BASIC commodities exports, forgetting that the ones who make more money than them are :
- ALL the distribution intermediaries
- and those selling the inputs products such as tractors, pesticides, fongicides, GMO seeds.
- those selling luxury goods to the minority wealthy Brazilians such as BMWs, Mercedes...or expensive watches ! Hey Hey !

But please please please continue to double, triple, quadruple your low margins BASIC commodities. The more you produce them
the more the intermediaries (mostly foreigners) .....WILL MAKE MORE PROFITS !!!!!!

But dont count that Rolex will double or triple their production in the next few years.....just to see their profit margins going down !!!! Creating luxury goods with high value added and some type of shortage....is the surest way to have a BIG PROFIT !!!!

That is exactly what my intention is with the large land I am developing in Brazil....and produce BBB coffee, BBB coffee meaning
Blue Brazilian Bean, which will be of higher quality than the BHB.....Blue Haitian Bean...with seeds coming from there !!!!!
As I said in my previous post on that subject, we dont need to find buyers with high marketing costs. Buyers are knocking at our doors
to find out how much of our future production they could eventually buy. A few are even ready to purchase 100 % of our production....but we refuse....since it will lower over time.....our selling price. We want buyers to compete against other buyers by bidding higher and higher and not against us ! We will never ever....OVERPRODUCE !!!!!
And we dont care at all about the International coffee price, the same as Rolex doesnt care about cheap and worthless Chinese or Taiwanese watches !!!!!!

Hey Hey we are going to do it the Swiss Way....once more ! Top quality...top prices AND ....top profit margins !

Are Swiss not already doing the same in chocolate......despite we dont produzce 1 cocoa bean ?????????

Have Swiss not won the sailing America Cup....TWICE IN A ROW......despite we dont have 1 pint of sea water or 1 square inch of sea access ?????? Just think of it ! smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/cheesy.gif

You can then realize why Switzerland, despite its high wages, are regularly ranked AS THE MOST COMPETITIVE COUNTRY....IN THE WORLD !!!!!!!!!! smilies/wink.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/cheesy.gif

....funny too that Brazilians not knowing my country disagree with my statements, BUT ALL Brazilians having resided here for a while....AGREE WITH MY STATEMENTS !

But dont quote me badly because I never ever said we are at PARADISE. But when comparing with other countries, and even moe so with Brazil, we are certainly closer to Paradise than Brazil is. A lot closer !
That is why so many Brazilians prefer to get out of your f**king country, or dreaming to leave it, even ready to pay to leave, ready to become illegal "long stay tourists".
While the opposite is NIOT TRUE !!!!!!! Guess why !

I wonder what C ch hides from... He (or she) makes obvious grammatical mistakes (too much xenophobes, instead of too many) or the latest pot (AT paradise, instead of IN). This individual generates controversy through the posts, which usually have little connection with the issue at hand. I also wonder why, if he hates Brazil so much (f**ing couuntry), why does he come back so often? Please, sir or madam, do stay away from my articles, as you do a disservice to yourself and to this site. And, btw, are you really in Geneva? By your tone, you sound like that degenerate writer who self-published a book called "Brazil and The Brazilians", to which I gave a negative review a few years back.

THANKS GOD,there are tolerant Swiss like Ch.c, who put up with both legal and illegal Brazilian immigrants in Switzerland and participate in the cultural activities sponsored by them on the shore of Lake Geneva. They even watch the Soccer matches to gether and drink Ethanol.

Dear Ernest,

Good Article.

NYC deserves much more than that. Nós somos brasileiros, mas somos nyorkers ....

Abraço Grande,
Ana.
