Brazilian Caliman produces 15,000 tons of papaya a month In the sunny land of Espírito Santo, in southeastern Brazil, more precisely in Linhares, north shore of the coast, it is possible to find the largest papaya farm in Brazil. Of the 2,100 hectares of the Caliman farm, 600 hectares have the Golden, Formosa and Calimosa varieties planted on them, the latter the Brazilian hybrid version of the fruit.

According to Rosângela Caliman, one of the company directors, at the moment the main concern is to consolidate Brazilian papaya on the foreign market. "In the near future, we want the fruit no longer to be considered an exotic fruit, becoming a fruit consumed regularly, as has occurred with mangos and pineapple," she explained.

Today, around one third of the 15,000 tons of papaya picked a month at the farm, which generates 423 direct jobs, are exported to the United States, Canada and European countries like England, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain and Italy.

"The Caliman target is to increase the volume exported to the European and North American market, increasing the market share of papaya in these countries. For the time being, Caliman is not after new markets, but there are plans for that in future," explained Rosângela.

To reach the objective of expansion, Caliman invests approximately 500,000 Brazilian reais (US$ 250,000) a year in agreements with research institutes to promote genetic improvement and develop new technologies for industry.

"Any research involving genetic improvement takes on average five years. That was the time necessary for development of the Calimosa hybrid," explained Rosângela.

Calimosa papaya is the result of 84 crossings and investment of 2 million reais (US$ 1 million). The fruit of the crossings between Formosa and Golden papaya was developed in partnership between Caliman and the University of North Rio de Janeiro (Uenf).

Recently forwarded to producers in Espírito Santo, the Calimosa has middle-sized fruit, i.e., larger than the Golden and smaller than the Formosa variety, and has great productivity. "It weighs on average one kilogram (about 2 lbs) and the skin is dark green. The pulp is very orange and may be as much as 26% sweeter than the Formosa," explained Rosângela.

Also produced for export, the Calimosa should not compete with the Golden, the export leader, as they are different varieties, with different sizes and flavours. It will initially be exported at small volumes, being tested on the foreign market.

The Caliman offices are on Santa Terezinha farm, in the city of Linhares, in the state of Espírito Santo. The farm includes the crops, germplasm bank made up of 52 different genetic materials and the company's administrative sector.

In the city of Natal, capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, the company runs Caliman Agrícola RN and the fruit-processing unit. The location is strategic due to logistics - due to a port in Natal - for better serving the foreign market.

Brazil is the main global producer of papaya and the third largest exporter, losing only to Mexico and Malaysia, according to figures supplied by the Brazilian Fruit Institute (Ibraf). The fruit is cultivated in all Brazilian regions and the main producer states are Bahia and Espírito Santo.

FACTS:
1984 Caliman Agricola start to export to Europe; (HLB Tropical Fruits didn’t existed)
1998 Caliman Agricola start to export to the USA (HLB Tropical wasn’t affiliated with Caliman)
1998 Caliman open offices in Florida and Toronto (HLB Tropical wasn’t affiliated with Caliman)
2003 HLB becomes the major distributor for Caliman Agricola and a joint venture is created.

Caliman International is the representative and worldwide distributor of Caliman Papayas.
Caliman Agrícola was the first to cultivate Papaya in the Espírito Santo State, a place where only coffee was cultivated before. In 1984 we started the exportation to Europe and in 1998 to the American market.
In 1998, Caliman International established operations in the USA, opening offices in Plantation, Florida and Toronto, Canada.
The amount exported by Caliman reaches the impressive number of 12,000 tons per year. We are one of the greatest exporters of Papaya in the whole world; we are responsible for 2/3 of the whole amount exported by Brazil.

Thus it is not Caliman ! Caliman just apply the HLB technology...that as you say yourself......revolutionized the papaya market, offering superior service and fruits of excellent quality.*
True that we cant count on Brazilians for superior services and quality.
This is known worldwide.

Ohhh and if you are not aware, HLB Tropical Food also purchase fruits....from other countries, such as Colombia.
Therefore it is not a joint venture, as you pretend, but just an association as clearly stated in the Caliman site ! Sorry for you.


Brazil is such a great country based upon your comments, that your TOTAL exports are still below....US$ 1000.- per capita....annually, DESPITE YOU CARESS AND SELF COMPLIMENT YOUR NAVEL 24/7/365 !

Ohhhhh and by the way, my small country with a population of 7,5 millions, export more than Brazil with a population of 190 millions.
Quite funny, knowing that 60 % of our land is mountainous, we have an overall bad climate, we have no sea access and we have nothing of value in our ground.

As to Brazil, true, you produce 500 millions tons and keep increasing , sugarcane.
What a great technology you have, knowing that you harvest over 60 % of your sugarcane manually, just as you did 200 years ago !

Swiss hunter kills two bisons in Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park

A national of Switzerland has killed two endangered European bison species, a female animal and her one-year-old calf, in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park.

The killing occurred on November 14. Police instituted criminal proceedings under Part 3 of the Criminal Code's Article's 282 that penalizes poaching. The 63-year-old Swiss held a Belarusian state hunting license to kill deers and wig hogs only.

The European bison, commonly known as the wisent, is almost extinct in its natural range and survives only in a few managed herds. The Belarusian environmental protection ministry allows killing only old or culled species.


*** The Swiss defense team spokesman said that the two were just lonely in the woods and just wanted a "little Bison lovin" as they've done for many generations... but apparently the foreign Bulls showed no interest in the two Swiss nationals, causing them, not only, severe psychological pain and suffering, but also momentarily incapacitating their judgment to distinguishing the bulls from any other animals (or foreigners).***

I asked them over at the makeup trailer and they didn´t know. They don´t know much of anything.

Why is OK to kill the old bison?

Papaya Mama, pearl of the deep blue sea....How can they ship papaya overseas when we can´t even get them into the city from the farm without losing 20% to bruising?

Wasting my time if all you know how to do is bash the Swiss. Disregard.
