For Many Men in Brazil, Beating Up Women Is a Right PDF Print E-mail

Many men say they believe they have a right to beat up their wives or companions when they do not do domestic tasks as they should be done, reports Dario Córdoba, a psychologist at an NGO, the Promundo Institute.

Córdoba conducted a survey of 749 men between the ages of 15 and 60 and found that over 51% of the men interviewed used some form of violence - physical, psychological or sexual - against their wives or companions.

Over 25% said they used physical violence. The men resided in two low-income and one middle-income neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.

Córdoba says the use of violence is linked to socio-cultural standards. "Men follow a pattern where sex is more important than affection. And violence rather than dialogue is seen as a legitimate way to resolve conflicts, such as whether or not to use a condom," he says.

Based on the results of the survey, the Promundo Institute is promoting activities in Rio neighborhoods where violence is part of daily life.

Men are being shown that there are other ways to deal with problems in their relationships with the people they live with.

Córdoba says results have already begun to appear. "The big challenge is to rethink the concept of masculinity. Not just from a legal point of view, but in terms of behavior," he concludes.

Don't go to work and she will beat you up by having sex with another man!
A lazy woman should be kicked out!
Beating her is inexcusable!

It's enough that women are able to vote in serious elections, but now we can't beat our wives or girlfriends up? I have a loving girlfriend since two years, and I don't have any problems beating her. She and every other girl must be beaten by their men occasionally, so they know their place.

Saying men and women are equal is like saying God and men are equal.

To the person that said women must be beaten and are worse them men, you have major issues with your head. I hope you get f**ked by a big fat guy and then beat the shit out of by a woman or two while youre tied up to a pole.

I don’t support men who regularly beat their wives. At the same time a man is the leader in any marriage.
Women should accept the fact that men rule over them in any relationship. You cant have two captains in a ship.
He has the right to correct the woman in love. Women should submit to their husbands and men should love
their wives. So if you love your wife you wont treat her badly.

Actually, you can have two captains in a ship.

And if the man wants to be a good leader, he has to develop the skills to discuss, negotiate, and convince. Then, if the women doesn't agree, she will at least understand the choices he is making. A good leader is not a dictator who forces others into submission or makes all the decisions on his own. A good husband appreciates the wisdom of his wife and seeks her opinion, the same as any good leader.

A woman is not the same as a child to "correct." She is an adult, in the same way that a man is an adult, and is capable of being right and also of making a mistake, the same way as all human beings.

And what is this contradiction of not supporting men who REGULARY beat their wives? It's right or it's wrong.

I don't think is a good idea for men to beat up their wives because one their wives doesn't have strenght like them. so they shouldn't say that because they are of the weaker sex, so they can do whatever they like.
