Brazil - Brazzil Mag - UnaSur, the South America Union, Is Born Today in Brazil

Leaders of South America are scheduled to meet this Friday, May 23, in Brazil for a summit. During the encounter the visiting heads of government and host Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will be signing the legal framework of the charter for the Union of South American Nations, UnaSur.

Originally identified as the South American Community of Nations, it was first conceived in 2005 in Cuzco, Peru, during a regional leaders' summit.

UnaSur is made up of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay and Bolivia.

The leaders of all member countries have confirmed their assistance to Brasília with the exception of Uruguay and Peru that will be represented by the vice president and the Foreign Affairs minister, respectively.

The blueprint of the charter was worked out earlier in the month in a technical meeting in Venezuela. However once signed "since it is a treaty," according to Brazilian diplomatic sources, the charter must be considered and approved by the different legislative branches.

A "transition period" until the full legitimate formality has been achieved will also be discussed, "although it's not central to Friday's agenda," added Brazilian diplomatic sources.

Another issue on the table is the Brazilian initiative for the creation of a South American Defense Council, with the purpose of coordinating defense policies in the region and work towards a common understanding on the matter.

Brazilian Defense minister Nelson Jobim last month visited most countries in the region to discuss the proposal with local officials from the Executive branch and legislative Defense committees.

"It's more ambitious than a military alliance, it's a forum to discuss and agree on common defense policies," said Jobim. The proposal was well received in most countries but Uruguay asked for more time to consider the concept.

UnaSur was scheduled to meet in January in Colombia but was delayed for March and then indefinitively because of the conflict between Colombia and Ecuador triggered when the incursion of Colombian forces in Ecuadorian border territory to eliminate a guerrilla camp.

We already have Mercosul and there is no reason to create another block. Is it something to do with São Paulo Forum? Worth keeping track of the evolution of this formidable block.

That is right. For the past 150 years, the other members of UnaSur have been living off the backs of the Brasilians.They steal our refinaries, want us to pay more for the electrical energy generated by Itaipu, call all sorts of names and yet stab us on our backs.

Finally we have waken up. Instead of pleasing you all, we sell our resources to the Chinese,food to the Arabs, ethanol to Asian countries and export our Novelas to Europe.

We don't need Hugo,Lugo,Evo,Cristina,Michelle,Fidel, Rafael,et & all to tell us what to do.If you want to survive, you guys better start planting Soy beans on the Andes and try to sell to the Chinese and try to make a little bit of money.

Brazil is twice as big as the European Union.

Brazil has all the resources to become a major player.

I wrote about the creation of such a union a few years ago - and I even made a suggestion for the name for the currency of such block of countries - The Bankrupt.

The European Union has the "Euro" and the South American Union will have the "Bankrupt".

The only country that Brazil should consider adding to Brazil it is Uruguay, because Uruguay used to belong to Brazil until 1828. (Provincia Cysplatina.)

I wonder which group of people are behind the formation of the SAU.

Brazil should stay independent - but if the rest of South America (about 50 percent of South America) decides to recreate a new Spanish Union in South America - That would be fiine with me.

I still in shock with the news of the formation of this SAU.

I did read about it over the years, but I never thought this thing it would amount to much.

Thank you for the information about Sao Paulo Forum - sorry about my ignorance, but this is the first time I heard of this group.

I wonder why this people had to use the name of my state and town - Sao Paulo - as the name of their group. They are going to stain the name of my home town with this group.

UNASUR is a great deal for Brazil. People calling for the return of Castelo Branco or the Cisplatine Republic are delusional. There is only one Latin American nation fragmented into many states. The differences in language are insignificant, as they are in the European Union or the U.S. Get over it! There is a new world waiting to be forged becasue the old system you guys created and seek to maintain is morally bankrupt and incapable of meeting domestic and global needs. Where is your idealism? The Christian Democratic parties support the new UNASUR. Histocially, the United States has also supported a Latin American Common Market. Get over it!! It is possible to recreate a better world. Everyone in the world knows the state system as we know it is unsustainable as evinced by the United States and the European Union, which are ultimately Common Markets. People "want to end the time they live in" so they can have a better world for themeselves and their children.

Everyone in the world knows the state system as we know it is unsustainable as evinced by the United States and the European Union, which are ultimately Common Markets.

We already have a common market called Mercosul or Mercosur. So what is the purpose of creating UnaSul?

I am anxious to hear your answers. We already have professors from Harvard, Sorbonne and other reputable domestic and foreign learning institutions chalking the destiny of Brasil. I guess the opinions of a professor from SUNY will certainly help to correct the course!

Anyway, the MercoSur it is just a group of countries that made agreements to facilitate the inter country commerce among the members of that group.

The South America Union is a different animal all together - basically the main purpose of that type of agreement it is to form a new country with a new currency, a Central Bank, a new constitution, and so forth.

It makes sense for the Spanish countries of South America to form such an union, but it does not make sense to include also Brazil.

South America is OFFICIALLY in the game now.. It's not about Brazil . Nationalists shouldn't be so vain. The bomb will be dropped soon on the U.S with the North American Union. NAU. They just have to get us broke and tired for us to be able to accept it without much revolt.

People "want to end the time they live in" so they can have a better world for themeselves and their children.

This "Professor of History " is dellusional. Sort of reminds of the "moral relativist" that I blogged with before. The "movers and shakers" as he calls them,,(those that think prophecy is hocus pocus) are bringing in their NEW WORLD ORDER.. and fast. This is what is so amazing. There's no need to change currencies just peg them.

The best thing an average person can do is buy property wherever in the world their currency is "currently" stronger. And flip it.

Anyway , Latin America can just look forward to some regional crises to REALLY seal the deal. Get all the dissidents quiet. Everyone on a united front. And proceed with the plan.

They are just preparing for the collapse of the US dollar as the world's reserve currency. As it sits, they trade amongst themselves mostly in US dollars. Some even use US dollars as currency. That's a big problem going forward.

When the gulf nations release the pegs, its going to put that much more pressure on others to escape the collateral damage the dollar's demise will cause.

Its just a cycle, and they are smart to move sooner rather than later.

Now THIS is exactly what's going on!

You're right! Land anywhere your currency is stronger is a winner as the global economies unify.
What I find so interesting is that you "have" to keep up with everything to even begin to understand it. And a lot of that involves "time" , that only a privleged few have. Most are running around trying to survive or hold on to what they have.
I watch CNN all day and do you think they "mentioned" UnaSur? .. NO!
You have to be online to know what is going on these days.

btw, I (nor Dnbaiacu) was talking about the farm prices just only in Bahia or Brazil in general.We were talking in a broader context (of UnaSur). Remember, DNB, Ricardo and I were discussing about UnaSul and the proposed new currency as well its implications on the "New World Order".
