Brazil's Lula Calls EU's New Immigration Rules "Hateful Persecution" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Thursday, 03 July 2008

Immigration rally in Europe The Brazilian president and his South American colleagues meeting at the Mercosur summit called the new European Union immigration policies that permit the detention of undocumented workers for up to 18 months "xenophobic" and said the measure may damage economic ties between the two regions.

Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, had tough criticism against the new EU rules on immigration calling them "hateful persecution. According to the Brazilian leader the problem of illegal immigration will not solved by prohibiting the poor from entering Europe.

"We keep on backing the civilian society's participation channels and favoring the free circulation of men and women while, on the other side of the ocean, a hateful persecution is being unleashed against Latin-Americans, often accompanied by racial overtones," said Lula in the speech that marked Brazil's presidency in Mercosur.

Celso Amorim, Brazil's Foreign Minister, announced that the Unasur countries will appeal to the UN against the EU decision.

"We will call attention to the theme during the UN's General Assembly," Amorim stated, "and maybe also at the Human Rights Council, We've been analyzing several action to take. The subject needs juridical analysis. What they use is the same term that was used against terrorist during the time of the IRA, when even children were detained."

"We have to defend our citizens who emigrated abroad because they weren't able, at that time, to find the conditions in our own countries to build a better life," said Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez during the summit in Tucuman, Argentina.

"It's xenophobic and discriminatory," he insisted. "Emigrating is not tourism" said Vazquez who talked of being the grandson of poor European immigrants. "It hurts us deeply that there is no respect for the human rights of Latin American immigrants, who had to leave and seek elsewhere what they don't have in their own lands, just like their grandparents did."

The strong attacks on the EU both for its migratory and farm subsidies policies centered the last of the two day Mercosur summit when the pro tempore chair, for the second half of 2008 was passed on to Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Argentina presided over the first half of the year.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said the migratory measure could hurt trade and investment ties between Latin America and Europe. "We can't be silent about this," Chavez said at the summit. "We need to take a stand. So called civilized Europe is doing something barbarous."

The EU adopted the new immigration rules on June 18, and they are to take effect by 2010. The policy allows governments to detain illegal immigrants for up to 18 months and imposes a re-entry ban of up to five years. Thousands of Latin Americans migrate to Europe in search of job opportunities and the EU estimates eight to 12 million illegal immigrants live in Europe.

The Mercosur meeting also focused on the global food and energy crisis, noting that member nations have the potential to thrive, since its members include major energy and food exporters.

Brazil is the world's largest producer of sugar and of cane sugar ethanol, and second in soy. Argentina, also an important soy grower, is the world's No. 2 in corn and No. 4 in wheat.

"The situation of food and energy prices presents the region with an enormous opportunity if we can take advantage of it with solidarity and regional integration" said President Cristina Kirchner of Argentina, which hosted the summit.

WHEN the immigration policies of another nation who is trying to protect its

own people rights , to jobs , health care , houseing , food and in some cases the countrys own culture

is at danger of being lost .

the illegal movment of people to gain a better life in another country , is the fault of there home country for
failing to do for its own people , eather by just no good politicans whitch is the case in most SA countries ,
keeping all the money for them selves
or the slave trade in whitch the poor are sold because being a slave in another country is better than living free in there own home land .
the other is sex trade , in whitch all countries should be held up to the light on

look at it this way being in jail in europ is better than living in a faval you stand to live a bit long
as the drug lords and gunman cant get to you

Such nations (the U.S included )GOT the wealth that attracts these 'Immigrants" from and off the backs and blood of the ancestors of these 'immigrants".

BIG FOREIGN POLICY CHECK
Such "home countries" have their "no good politicians" strategically placed in power BY certain European countries and the U.S. Let's not get it twisted. The money they "keep for themselves", is just their unspoken, under the table ,"compensation" for assuming the positions.
The cause is GREED. The effect PARANOIA.
Get over it!
It's funny how some nations have no problem selling and imposing their "culture" all over the world. And then later cry about needing"protect" it. Stop sending your crimminals everywhere. And breed with your own women. And you won't have this "problem" with immigration. That's not going to happen. So the complaints are just plain SILLY.

Well, Lula is certainly quite familiar with the term “xenophobia” as of late but for him to use it against others is a tad hypocritical. You can’t open a newspaper these days in Brazil without seeing, “Brazil will investigate foreigners”, “Brazil wants to REregister foreigners who own property” “limit foreign purchases”, “keep foreigners out” (these are LEGAL foreigners). That said, I do think the 18 month detention clause is draconian, and I´d prefer Europe deal with unwanted foreigners as Brazil does: do a shakedown for some cash and then send them packing the same week if not the same day.

written by dnbaiacu, July 03, 2008
Immigration ,, legal or illegal for better oppurtunity in a more prosperous country is a direct result of previous COLONIZATION. The chidren of the oppressed are only looking for a way to live DECENTLY in the very countries that previously PLUNDERED their countries in the first place.
as far a criminals leaving the US to go to brasil

Misunderstood...

written by ch.c., July 04, 2008
SO WRONG !!!!!!!

Was Brazil colonized by the USA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain ???????

And in Brazil, the problem is NOT wealth, but the re-distribution of it.
That is why Brazil is ranked within the World Worst Ten Countries....for wealth and social redistribution.
Therefore your arguments have no basis.

Brazil is not considered as a poor country but as a middle income country....if you did not know.

Therefore it is due to Bin the Crook policies and his predecessors...that tens of millions Brazilians CANNOT LIVE......DECENTLY !!!!!

You have wealth....just share it more fairly but dont accuse ......."the others as Brazilians regularly do"
Brazilians excel in doing so, instead of admitting their own problems and solving them.

most become not much more than slaves , to many forms of business the worst is sex expoltation of any one that walks .
child labur , gang & drug activites .

An off topic subject: Rescue of Ingrid

I read the following comments in a blog today:

Did the news media in Switzerland really come up with this news? Do you get to listen to this Rádio Suíça Romanda (RSR)?

Enlightening stats. Yet not surprising.
Truuth is , we know this. The U.S has to take care of its cheap labor just like it took care of slaves and indentured servants a couple centuries ago and beyond. Nothing has changed. The country was built on cheap and free labor just like Brazil and most countries across the Atlantic from Europe and Africa.
The point is the U.S and some European countries,, particularly England, Spain, Portugal, France and any number of the other countries over there tied in behind the scenes through banks , created immense wealth off the blood , sweat and tears of the ANCESTORS of todays said immigrants in the U.S and yes ,xenophobic european countries. So what if their DESCENDANTS are looking to survive or PROFIT for that matter. They were taught well by the COLONISTS . It's all part of the game. There will ALWAYS be consequences. Effects for every cause. So WHOEVER is losing jobs to immigrants in Europe or the U.S can thank the kings and queens of Europe from at least the 16th century and onward . And every president of the U.S up to Abraham Lincoln. Simply GET OVER IT!
How you surive and thrive in such lands is have land and your own business. Self-employment. That's what the founding fathers did. They created the system. You have to follow it the way they worked it. Because if you are working "directly" for THEM in you are still their SLAVE no matter your national or ethnic background. The Fed is insuring that.
Only the ignorant or uninformed complain about this "immigration problem". The problem is not knowing how the system works. Or being in denial about it.
You have to know how the system was designed. How it was always worked. And work with it. Don't believe the "American Dream" or any of these other countries dreams and ideaologies. They are all lies.

Absolutely the most insightful comment I have EVER seen on the comments board.
But don't be so certain the reversal of this mess won't be in our lifetime. There is every indication prophetically that the following process is beginning

44 “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite; Daniel 2:44

as far as his thoughts well if you only know one side of history well that is what you can only speak about

What is constant is the universal law of cause and effect. Wealthy countries attract people.. Legal and illegal. Wealthy countries were created and maintain themselves off of cheap and free labor. What part of history do you have to understand to get a clearer picture or explanation for denunciation ot the "immigration problem". ????
at least the US stoped slavery and at its higest number there were only 600.000 slaves ever in the US
now they are 40 million of the best educated
riches , higest life style of all blacks in the world .

Subconcious glossing over and denial attempt. But it is ok .. it how many excuse what happen.
Yes,, blacks in Africa were involved in the slave trade and are just as guilty for the millions that died at sea in the Middle Passage.
Blacks in America have the highest lifestyle of blacks the world over because the U.S is a wealthy country (highly in question now) built in large part physically by THEIR ancestors.
But is interesting they are as apt to complain about the immigration issue. They know the system. They recognize that the new slaves are just different nationality. Nothing has really changed. And with mans efforts , it won't because the system as such is global.
But I am so sure I am not educating you on anything.... I hope. It is just the mathematics of greed and exploitation. And they have consequences.. Immigration.. Legal or illegal. Was it necessarily "legal" morally speaking to kill milliions of native north and south american indians or africans? No..So why do people complain about their "jobs" being lost to their "mongrelized" descendants? It ia a waste of time.
even the so called slave workers brought over to work in swet shops get better pay than in there home countries .

Again the "home countries" of these immigrants are in the condition they are in because of AFFLUENT OR FIRST WORLD , DEVELOPED WORLD or however you want to call it. FOREIGN POLICY.
Honestly I was horrified to discover this personally when I went to live and study in a foreign country in the carribean for the first time. I was nieve enough to think that such said "home countries" were the way they were because the populace in general including its leaders in office just lacked the know how to make things better. I realized soon that was the biggest lie I was fed and wanted to believe. It is ALL ABOUT FOREIGN POLICY . Nothing more ,,nothing less. In order for the First world to live as it does, third world or "developing world countries HAVE TO STAY SUBJUGATED BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
Result.. immigration problem smilies/wink.gif

what was the norm 500 years ago was not the norm 200 years ago and not the norm now

simple slavery was a business for thousands of years past .

150 ago it went out of style , wars were fought to stop it . and are still going on today

but we the people that never owned slaves are to blame for the past of others

the people today never were slaves , and in most cases will never be . so why do they complain
so much about the past that they never were a part of and most only work off here say .

again the rich of the host countries get richer off the backs of there own poor

look at china and inda today large gap in wealth

than look at brasil same fact different country

it is left up to the governments to make trade fair and pay the same

I totally agree that host countries get rich off of their own poor. But affluent countries have their lifestyle based on developing countries maintaining a large poor class so that affluent countries can buy imports at much cheaper prices than they would otherwise. We couldn't live like we do in the U.S or any G 8 nation and several other european nations without developing nations maintaining oppressive and repressive regimes which are directly influenced by western world foreign policy. We would not be able to live so "excessively" here without others having so much less. And this is politically and militarily manipulated. The ruling elite of developing countries would have to take a moral position on all political fronts within their own borders to resistance outside trade and military influence. Unfortunately this is not going to happen. So I personally believe and promote recognizing the system for how it really works and not how we would like to believe it should work. Be an entrepreneur , embrace capitalism fairly, and be a minimalist.
