Brazil's Incubator Program to Help Oil Companies PDF Print E-mail
Written by Isaura Daniel
Monday, 28 July 2008

Industrial park in Rio, Brazil A Brazilian project in Rio de Janeiro is going to help place companies that operate in oil and gas production technology in the market. Next year will see the start of a program turned exclusively to the sector, at the Business Incubator of the Coordination for Postgraduate Engineering Projects (Coppe) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

According to the manager of the Incubator, Regina Fátima Faria, the project will be integrated by oil and gas technology companies recently established or in the process of being established.

This profile includes, for example, from companies that work with seismic technology to instrumentation. "They may be companies that already exist, but in an embryonic state, and that are having a hard time to develop," explained Regina.

One of the requirements to participate in the project is the degree of innovation of the proposal. The incubator, according to Regina, is to be a site in which professionals with technical knowledge should receive support in the area of business to take ahead their companies.

The call to selection for the program should be opened this year so that the work may begin next year. Taken into consideration, for the selection of the projects, will be the level of innovation of the companies, the technical capacity of the group responsible, the economic viability of the proposal and the possible integration with the UFRJ.

Normally, the incubator is sought by students in the institution itself, in areas like engineering, interested in opening their enterprises with the scientific knowledge originating in studies.

The program for oil industries, which is being called Oil Incubator, will have a specific structure within the Technological Park in Rio de Janeiro, where the Coppe/UFRJ Business Incubator is already located.

The Studies and Projects Funding Body (Finep), of the Ministry of Science and Technology, is going to turn 3 million Brazilian reais to the first phase of construction of the site. The building should cover an area of 2,700 square meters and capacity to receive up to 25 companies. In the first phase the first floor will be erected, with eight industrial modules.

The Technological Park of Rio de Janeiro, in Ilha do Fundão, where the UFRJ campus is located, started operating around three months ago. There is still, however, work in progress. When it is ready, the unit should host 220 companies and technological laboratories.

The project was thought up by the UFRJ, in partnership with the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, with the support of the Green and Yellow Fund. Petrobras and the Ministry of Science and Technology are going to invest 30 million Brazilian reais in the project through sector funds operated by Finep.
