In China, Brazilian President Tries to Keep WTO Talks' Flame Alive PDF Print E-mail
Written by Luciana Lima

Lula meets Jintao in China The Brazilian minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, stated that the result of the latest meeting of the Doha Round, held in Geneva, should have a negative effect on the world food crisis. According to him, the main issue that might harm production in poor countries is subsidized production of agricultural commodities in wealthy countries.

f"The relation between the agreement and the food crisis resides in the matter of subsidies. This is not the only issue, but it is the main one. When farmers are subsidized in the United States or Europe, production in impoverished countries is discouraged," explained the minister, this Thursday, July 7, during an interview granted to radio stations at the studios of the Brazilian Communication Company.

"Investment by the productive sector depends on market incentives. What the Doha Round does is create a positive environment for encouraging investors. If it fails, then this encouragement does not take place."

The minister refrained from using the term 'failure' to describe the negotiations, as the Brazilian government does not consider that conversations are over with other countries, in order to close multilateral deals that will ensure good working conditions for farmers in emerging countries.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva himself, who is on a trip to Beijing, where he will attend the opening of the Olympic Games, discussed the matter with the president of China, Hu Jintao, and intends to make a telephone call to the prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh, in an attempt to resume negotiations.

Last week, Lula discussed the matter by telephone with the president of the United States, George W. Bush. In the opinion of Amorim, even though the lack of an agreement might cause serious damage to Brazil, the country is still able to compete on an international level better than impoverished nations are.

"Brazil might even be able to resist, to face these subsidies, although they will do us serious damage. We went to the WTO World Trade Organization to complain about them. But there are countries poorer and with less resources than Brazil, countries that do not count on an Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) as Brazil does, and countries that are unable to go up against the subsidized production of wealthy nations."

"It is a paradox. There is an element that could even be used as a food aid, however it creates a dependency, an inability of poorer countries to cater to their own demand, or to the demand of other countries," asserted the minister.

I agree. Negative effect, because the talks were held in Geneva, where too many interfering Swiss citizens trying to scuttle the "Talks". IMHO, the next round should be held in Doha itself.I think that our Prez and his Minister should stress on this fact. smilies/cheesy.gif

anti-imperialists in the new world-order - China is already watching
written by Coburg, August 08, 2008
The forces at the core leading forward two of the emerging giants' great cause are their respective Communist Parties; even where it’s no longer officially in power.

The theoretical basis guiding their thinking remains Marxism-Leninism, despite the current, fancy imperialist surfaces, which in the end, will be shed like a dragon’s skin, so that their peoples can fully embrace the return of the true cause and resume the true path.

Since the successful national revolutions, there have been, naturally, communist parties in both great nations, without which the Marxist-Leninist revolutionary theory would not have been developed and inculcated into so many for so long. Once the dialectical forces inevitably trigger the materialistic carcass to drop, a new reformed covering will emerge based on its true foundation, as set by the wisdom of Lenin and Mao.

But right now,it is time for Brazilians to enjoy the best Olympics the planet has ever seen, and reflect upon its future, the forthcoming age of Enlightment under a new world order.

You kept your visit to Beijing as a state secret and I resent this fact. You could have told us beforehand so that we might have considered joining you. I lodge my protests.

However, instead of spending $8000 to go to Beijing, we watched the opening on the TV. I must confess that it was indeed a spectacular show, though it took about 4 hrs and 15 minutes. Since it started at 9 A.M., our time, I did not open cans of cold ones and had to stick just to plain water.

C.HC you know more about brasilian budget this place took 40 billion US to build .

You better ask Ch.c this question in person, as I saw him on the TV leading the Swiss delegation.I could not understand why the entire team of Swiss athletes(including men) were wearing Red skirts. Please do clarify this important issue and give us his reply.

i could get in real trouble here QUICK

No, you are not going to get into any trouble. Let Fatima take the lead and deploy her diplomacy.

they do have about every type of food you could ever think of to eat , just dont know how safe the street food is here now .

It is safe to eat, but ensure that you eat more rice noodles, vegetables and fruit.Bean sprouts are pretty good food too.

have a good one nap time

Thanks and you too. Keep us informed.

Another question: On the local TV, they were saying that the opening was emphasising on 4 important inventions by the Chinese a) Paper b) Gun Powder c) Compass d) I could not make out in English. In Portuguese it is supposed to be Pergaminho. What is it in English?

You take care and realx. You might decide to extend your stay in China, like a friend of mine did last year.

So right for the coffee farmers Brazil heavily subsidizes, when these beans ar not even grown in developed countries.
And what about the US$ 55 billion loans provided by your BNDES at at much lower subsidized rate a ?
Wellll 75 % are for the minority commercial farmers, and only 25 % for the 5 miilions or so of family farmers.

For coffee, lets face it, your subsidizes are against other emerging or poors nations coffee producers.
But....silence, not a word ever on that subject.

Ohhhhh and what about your partner : China ?
Are they NOT subsidizing MOST of their industries and not only their agriculture ???

Brazil go very well along with China.
Thus feel free to feed them as much as you could, because curiosuly not only Brazil bars many Chineses products due to their cheaper prices, But China also doesnt import some agricultural foods from Brazil.....to protect their own farmers !!!!

Why doesnt Brazil says to China : "stop subsidizing your industries, so that Brazil can take market share.....with our own subsidizes !!!!"

Quite fair in Brazilians views !
