Brazil's Petrobras Wants Public to Help It Spend US$ 300 Million in Environment PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Monday, 18 August 2008

Water and climate in Brazil Brazilian oil company Petrobras is going to turn 500 million Brazilian reais (US$ 309 million) to environmental projects between 2008 and 2012. The funds should be used for sponsorship, strengthening environmental organizations and spreading information about sustainable development.

The Petrobras Environment Program was just launched by the company. The enterprise is going to choose, through public selection, a series of projects to be benefited.

Of the US$ 309 million, Petrobras is going to turn US$ 37 million to programs selected by the public. The projects must be developed over a period of two years, and enrolment is already open.

The theme elected by the company is "Water and climate: contributions to sustainable development". The previous program focused on water and biodiversity.

According to the Institutional Communications executive manager at Petrobras, Wilson Santarosa, the program is a company contribution to the construction of a Brazilian environmental agenda and restates the Petrobras engagement with protection of the ecosystem of the sites it operates in.

The Petrobras environmental program for 2008 to 2012 should follow three lines of operation. One is the management of waterways, with the objective of reverting the process of degradation of water resources and promoting its rational use.

Another line is the recovery of species and coastal environments and the third is the capture of carbon and emissions to recover degraded areas, conserving forests and natural areas.

Petrobras is going to promote, between August 20 and September 15, events in several cities in Brazil to clarify its environmental program. Company technicians are going to explain the rules of the program and how the projects should be elaborated. The idea is to guide those interested in the development of proposals.

ECOA and Coalizacao Rios Vivos come to mind

So far as I know the fight is still on to protect the Pantanal from exploitation for alchohol. This is the struggle that resulted in the only self-immolation for environmental reasons I have ever heard of. If some attention is finally being focused on rivers and watersheds then here's a chance to stop before the next hugely important destruction is done. This would be an excellent place for PetroBras to weigh in as a concerned partner in the environment. Will one of these hearing be in Campo Grande?

and what about a far far far far bigger problem that Brazil never writes about....on purpose :

Brazil has around 170 millions cattles and ??? number of swines.

If you did not know, every cattle pollutes more than an average size American car, because every cattle produce more CO2 emission than a car produces per day.

In many farms cattles can have their ease to cool down...in the farm ponds, or straight in the river if there is one in the farm. But while cooling down they dont stop producing dungs, if you see what I mean !

Swine dungs is even worse than cattle dungs.

Just a simple math :
every cattle produces around 12 dungs daily or 2 billion per day, or over 700 billion per year.
Agreed that some of it will fertilize the land, but what about the drainages that end up wether you like or not.....in the water rivers or lakes, themselves already polluted by the drainages of the polluted ponds and not taking in account yet the ease to cool down of these cattles directly in the rivers.

And what is happening when it rains ? More dungs drainages to the rivers and lakes.

And what is happening for cattles in feedlots, living in soils as high as 30-40 cms of PURE dungs, when it rains or flood ?

More pollution...of course !

I bet Bin the Crook has given instructions to greens & eco researchers, University directors, to never ever ever publish anything of their findings !!!!! And that not a single Brazilian Real has to be spent on these "stupids" things !!!

Another reality are the oil refineries.
The USA has not built one in the last 30 years, due to environmental reasons.
And very proudly, Gabrielli the head of Petrobras is building more and more refineries and stated : " so that Brazil could export gasoline/diesel to the USA, instead of oil "

Hmmmmm

And one of the largest of these new refineries will be built.....in Maranhao ! Is Maranhao not IN THE AMAZON ???????????

Allo, allo !!!!! Is nobody there anymore ????

Of course, I am here setting up an ambush for ya!

I did not know that you were an expert on energy produced by Cow-Dung. People may laugh at us, if we say that energy can be harnessed out of animal dung also. But it is true, is it not? Many, many years ago, I was doing some research on this alternative smilies/grin.gif
