Artists, Musicians and Chefs Give Washington DC a Monthful of Brazil PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Tuesday, 19 August 2008

Brazilian Capoeira Brazil Moves, a month long celebration of Brazilian life, arts, food and culture is about to start in the US capital.  From August 22 to September 27, 2008, Washingtonians will be able to enjoy and experience the rich diversity of life in Brazil from classical music, to the vibrant and energetic dancing of Capoeira to savoring the tastes of many national delicacies at events around the Washington, DC, region.

According to the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, the aim of Brazil Moves is to bring the best of Brazil to the federal capital. Besides the passion for soccer, the Embassy says, Brazil remains a bit of a mystery to many people. The events scheduled throughout the month should provide an opportunity Washington residents to try new experiences without leaving home.

The center point of the celebrations will include a Brazilian Independence Day event on September 7 at Baker Park in Frederick, Maryland, featuring singer-songwriter Chico Cesar and his band, arts and crafts, martial arts performances and a Brazilian food marketplace.

Other events scheduled include a food festival at Rumberos restaurant in Columbia Heights featuring Brazilian chef Wender Carvalho; an Oscar Niemeyer exhibition at the Museum of the Americas; Capoeira workshops featuring demonstrations and talks by renowned master players from Brazil at the City Museum; a photo exhibit by Almir Reis at Fine Arts & Artists Gallery in Georgetown; a literary panel discussion on Amazon themes by leading novelist Márcio de Souza at the Wilson Center and screenings of The Mystery of Samba, a documentary exploring the life of legendary samba school players at AFI Silver Theatre.

Events planned for the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage include renowned pianist Paulo Steinberg, a professor at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia; the Alexander-Soares Duo, a piano and violin group currently in residence at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana and conductor Ricardo Bernardes who will present a program featuring Brazilian music of the 18th century.

All events for Brazil Moves are free, with the exception of the food festival and documentary screenings.
