Brazil's USP, the University of São Paulo, was considered the 87th best university in the world in the Webometrics ranking. Of the 500 institutions mentioned, USP, which climbed 26 positions in comparison with the list produced in July 2008, is in the first place among the Brazilian universities.
The methodology of the ranking considers the quantitative analysis of material made available on the Web, especially those related to processes of generation and academic communication of scientific knowledge, evaluating scientific activities, their performance and impact.
The top ten positions in the Webometrics study are occupied by institutions in the United States. They are, respectively: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford, Harvard, California Berkeley, Cornell and Michigan Universities, the California Institute of Technology and the Universities of Minnesota, Illinois and Texas.
Among the Latin-American universities, the National Autonomous University of Mexico came in the first place, in 44th in the general list. After USP, among the 300 best in the world, came Unicamp (159th), the University of Chile (234th), the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (285th) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (299th).
USP also rose ten points in its position among the 300 most researched repositories in the world. The second edition of the Ranking Web of World Repositories places the USP Digital Thesis and Dissertation Library in the 76th position.
Both the researches, promoted by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), a Spanish public research organization, are disclosed twice a year, in July and January. Over 16,000 higher education institutions were analyzed worldwide.

Second, it's great that we (USA) have the best universities in the world, (above that corrupted swiss area), but to bad not many americans can't afford to go there. of course Ch.c. will laugh like a little girl again, but that's all what she, oh i mean he can behind the computer. You are aware Harvard University now hands out A's to students like it's candy? It's rated as one of the top Ivy schools in the United States. My university is no where rated "top" like Harvard but I have a professor in one of my classes who boasts how many students (seniors no less) he gives D's and F's to.

A Harvard University study issued this week confirmed reports of grade inflation at the prestigious Ivy League school, revealing that about half of the grades issued last year were A's or A-minuses.
The report tracked grades given at Harvard for the past 15 years and documented a steep increase in top grades in the last decade. A's and A-minuses accounted for 33.2 percent of all grades in 1985 but a staggering 48.5 percent last year. Failing grades, D's and C's made up less than 6 percent of all those given.
"I'm very glad the university is discussing the matter and is going to do something," Mansfield told Fox News in an interview. "It is a scandal -- and this is proof. It's bad for our reputation because we look so lax."
Some of the factors driving professors' generosity with grades were pressure to grade similarly to colleagues, fear of becoming known as a "tough grader," and pressure from students accustomed to higher grades, the Harvard study said.
A monkey could get an A in Harvard. It's a school for pumping out America's elites - you go to that school and your future is set.
