The Brazilian Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil, joined in today's opening of the 1st Ibero-American Congress on Sustainable Development.

The meeting is sponsored by the Brazilian Entrepreneurial Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), in partnership with the federal government, the United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization (UNESCO), and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Through Thursday, June 2, national and international experts in the fields of sustainable development and social responsibility will be gathered for a wide-ranging debate on the challenges to be faced to ensure a sustainable present and future for humanity.

The participants include the director of the World Bank, John Redwood, and the American physicist, Fritjof Capra. UNESCO will use the occasion to launch, in Latin America, the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
