Daniela Mercury played in Philadelphia Saturday night, and at least one patron was furious at the result. "This music makes my seat vibrate!", said an older gentleman by the ticket counter. "I can't stand this, please, move me further away." He would have been able to find plenty of seats in the balcony section, because at that moment a herd of twenty-somethings was rushing down the steps and in an attempt to enter the main hall. There they hoped to join their peers, who were dancing in the aisles. Jared Goyette is a freelance writer that works out of Philadelphia and Salvador. Google him to find out more. My anonymous friend,
I don't know how you get off seeing my take as negative on Daniela, or the concert for that matter. Your idea that as a critic you only pay attention to the music is infantile- a concert is not just the music being played, if it were that it would be nothing more then a recording session. Dance music is participatory, as Daniela well knows, and the "show" was a joint venture, or dialogue between her and the crowd. That as it is, any critic worth reading will pay attention to the whole inter exchange and avoid sloppy and cliche filled generalizations like "the crowd loved it" or "Daniela rocked that house, like she always has" The idea that at least part of the crowd was slow to warm up to the music was not only self-evident, it was also the opinion of Daniela's fellow performers- as in the back- up singers, musicians, and dancers that I also talked to after the show. (They as professionals, have a more critical view of their work then you,. the adoring, servile fan) By the end of the concert everyone was involved, which I made clear if you bothered to read the text to the end. Take for example: "By the end of the night Daniela had conquered all hearts and hips in attendance"" I don't know how I could have been more exclamatory. Live Life more optimistically? Please, go back to your self-help, auto-ajuda books, and if you want to write, learn to live critically. Ah, this was fun! Jared Goyette- jaredmgo@gmail.com report abuse
