The exhibition, sponsored by Brazilian Bradesco bank, will take place at the UN Exhibition Hall. The Christ the Redeemer statue, unveiled in 1931, is located at the top of a 710-meter hill, and can be seen from any part of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian initiative in support of the campaign "Vote for Christ the Redeemer. It is a Wonder" is aimed at attracting the 30 million votes needed for the Christ the Redeemer statue to become one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. Besides the large Brazilian community in the United States, the exhibition intends to make the representatives of the United Nations' 192 member countries aware of the features of the monument that represents Brazil in this contest. Brazil is also campaigning in Portugal to encourage people there to vote for the monument. Support encompasses activities by major Brazilian companies and the government, including support from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Everything is being done to acquire the 30 million votes needed for Christ the Redeemer to be chosen one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. "There are still 10 million votes needed for Christ the Redeemer to be chosen one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. The events we are promoting in New York and Portugal will encourage thousands of Americans, and Portuguese and Brazilian residents of these countries, who still have not voted for the statue, to join this campaign, which is so important to Brazil, with less than two weeks left to vote," said Luiz Carlos Trabuco, president of Bradesco Group. Through UNESCO, the UN is supporting the vote coordinated by the Swiss New 7 Wonders Foundation. To avoid the destruction that occurred to the first seven wonders of the world - of which remain only the Pyramids of Giza (Egypt), already guaranteed a place among the Seven New Wonders of the World - the six new monuments chosen will receive grants from UNESCO for their permanent maintenance. The results will be announced by actor Sean Connery, who played Secret Agent 007, at an event to be held in Lisbon (Portugal), known as the City of the 7 Hills, on the symbolic date of 07/07/07 - which only happens every 100 years - and with a soccer match featuring the best number 7s in the world, led by Portugal's Luis Figo. Service: Voting can be done at www.votecristo.com.br. Comments (12)

The Christ is a project of the brasilian engineer Heitorda Silva Costa, with the COLLABORATION of French sculptor Paul Landowski (Polish origin) and with the final drawings of the brasilian artist Carlos Oswald. Do a little research before posting shit on the internet. And the money was raised in Brasil, among the population, through campaigns, most of them lead by the catholic church ( in Brasil).

yessssss...you are right.....do some research first.
The statue WAS NOT a project from Heitorda Silva Costa...but a much older project from Brazilian churches !. And Landowski DESIGNED The statue.! " Costa was chosen to OVERSEE the construction of the new monument, to be designed by French monumental sculptor Paul Landowski. A group of engineers and technicians studied Landowski's submissions and the decision was made to build the structure out of reinforced concrete instead of steel, more suitable for the cross-shaped " Source : Wikipedia.com Ohhhhh...and what you probably dont know : "Though the Rio Archdiocese owns the monument, Landowski's heirs have taken steps in recent years to demand royalties for his work on the statue" Source : International Herald Tribune Continue your cheating and lying, that's all you are truly good at ! report abuse

As per chron.com :
"The 125-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer with outstretched arms overlooks Rio de Janeiro from atop Mount Corcovado. The statue was built in pieces in France starting in 1926 and shipped to Brazil. A railway carried it up the 2,343-foot mountain for the 1931 inauguration." Was Brazil unable to buil a 125 foot high statue....in 1926....when Egyptiasns built pyramids....MUCH BIGGER AND HIGHER.....THOUSANDS OF YEARS...EARLIER ????? Furthermore why is the Statue of Liberty, not a better choice ? It is a higher/larger statue, 151 feet height versus 125 feet. And built 50 years earlier than Chist The Redeemer. Ohhhhh of course, the medal should go to FRANCE AND FRENCHS.....TOO !!!!! report abuse

Brazil’s statue of Christ the Redeemer is a piece of tat! The Empire State building is the same age and a million times more impressive. How could they include this as a wonder? The stupidity of it takes my breath away.
You do realise the inclusion of this cheap looking monument, as a Wonder, has totally destroyed any credibility the new seven wonder project might have had? The Petronas Twin Towers, the Eiffel Tower, the Sears tower and a million other monuments around the world are far more deserving of the accolade, even the humble Edinburgh Castle is more of an impressive structure. I am sickened! No wonder UNESCO disowned the new Seven Wonders project! report abuse
